Creative Humans: Say hello to Her place.
By Nabi Williams.
Based in New York City, Joyce Lee is the founder and owner of lifestyle brand, Her place. Her collaborative work, products, and journal (which we highly recommend reading) are an accumulation of the pivotal role she plays in the ever-evolving and valued dialogue on women’s sexual health and well-being.
Through each Her place product, Joyce gives us the opportunity to spark thought-provoking conversations about our socialized presumptions relating to women’s empowerment, sexuality, and pleasure.
Starting out with the launch of the lauded Her Ribbon –– the dual-purpose hair ribbon, which comes in a range of materials that excite the senses, such as silk and organza, also serves as an intimate bondage accessory –– this is just one example of how Joyce creates space for other women to defy the “taboo of women-centric pleasure.”
In the spirit of women taking back their pleasure, by early 2022, Her place will be launching an array of pleasure products that allow its users to take ownership in their intimacy, romance, and selfhood. Each product will be made by and for women, women-allied, people of the global majority, LGBTQ people, and the creative world, and will invite its users to bring romance and sensuality to the body and the physical space in newfound ways.
Join us in this edition of “Creative Humans” as we get to know more about Joyce Lee, her inspirations, thoughts on art and design, as well as her dream project.

In your eyes, what’s the power of design and art?
Shock! It should move you, it should make you emotional and curious.
A design/art/architecture project that you always return to for inspiration?
Pina Bausch. The way in which she uses dance as a way to reconstruct the narrative around women and sexuality has always been very inspiring!
Three words that describe your practice?
Sensorial sensuality, romance, community.
What would be a dream project to realize? Set the scene.
I dream of collaborating with modern dancers and filmmakers to create the most beautiful, emotional, sensorial, sensual and romantic story telling of Her place.
Joy of work or work for joy?
Work for joy.
What is most misunderstood about design/art/creativity?
That it’s not essential.
If you could collaborate with anyone (current or historical), who would it be?
My brother, Hoyoung Lee. Also Pina Bausch, Es Devlin, Sarah Sze, Franca Sozzani, Carla Sozzani, Louise Bourgeois, Hilma af Klint , Frida Kahlo, Sade, Simone Rocha, Consuelo Castiglioni, Beyonce, Bong Joon Ho, Nam June Paik, Do Ho Suh and many more!
